On January 17, 1998, Westbank voters created the Westbank Community Library District, the very first library district in the state of Texas. With an 84% voter approval rate ( ! ), the Library began to receive stable sales tax funding for the first time. The Library receives 0.5% from the 8.5% sales tax collected in the library district.
This was accomplished through the hard work of Westbank Library trustees, volunteers, staff, and supportive legislators. They banded together to write and pass this innovative legislation to allow steady funding for Texas' libraries. As of 2012, 15 other library districts have been formed.
We hope the additional resources found on this site will encourage the continuing formation of other library districts in our state.
