Avoiding the New Parent Trap: Responsive Parenting Without Hovering

Raising a child or teen is much like teaching them to ride a bike. How fast is too fast to remove the training wheels, how long do we run alongside, and when do we let go? When is it okay for them to fall, when is it perhaps better for them to struggle, and when do we raise the alarm bells and step in to act? A developmentally responsive parenting approach calls on the strengths-based parenting movement born from positive psychology, collaborative problem solving, and burgeoning research into the impact of “overparenting” into the teen years and beyond. Please join us for a virtual conversation with Drs. Reeves and Stewart of Westlake Psychiatry & Psychology Associates. Parents will gain a brief overview of the parenting approaches recommended to maximize potential, accountability, responsibility, and authentic autonomy of children and teens on the road to adulthood. Parents are encouraged to submit questions during the conversation—we will get to as many of them as we can in the time allotted.
