“Outside of the Box” Children: Aiming for College Programs @ Laura’s

There are a variety of non-degree postsecondary options today for students with intellectual disabilities. Decisions made K-12 can have a big impact on whether your student with IDD stays on a path with postsecondary options at graduation or leaves that path.  Some of these decisions may be made “silently” without the parent getting full information about how the choice can affect a student’s path. This presentation will help parents make K-12 choices with better information about how those choices can affect college program options in young adulthood.

Suzanne C. Shepherd is an attorney who served as Director of Legal Services for Seton Healthcare, practiced law with Graves, Dougherty, Hearon & Moody and has served on the ethics committees of several hospitals.  Suzanne is also the mother of a young man with Down syndrome who is a freshman at the George Mason LIFE college program. She has presented on Down syndrome to healthcare providers, researchers, genetics counselors and parents locally, nationally and internationally and testified on disability issues before Texas State and House legislative committees.

Raising a child of any type is more art than science, but raising a child who doesn’t fit neatly into any “typically developing” box can be a particularly messy art. Parents of these “Outside the Box” children often ask themselves what is going on with my child and will they grow out of this? Do I need early intervention to help put them on their path to succeed? How can the schools help me? What other resources are available to help? What does a diagnosis mean for our benefits and our family?

Whether your child is diagnosed with special needs, has sensory issues, or their particular challenges have yet to be identified, we’ll explore the means to help you help your child here in the Westlake area.

Each month, through guest speakers and parent discussions, we will explore research, discover and share new techniques and approaches, and identify specific steps that can help you navigate the waters as you help guide your child through the confusing maze of childhood.

This series is targeted toward parents of children throughout the Eanes ISD school district whether in public, private, or home schooling and is open to everyone.
